Some of these comments don’t pass the vibe check. The food she ate isn’t the problem, at all. She can eat a cinnamon roll or muffin, or anything else she wants, but she needs insulin for it. Even if she snuck a carrot or some hummus it would be the same problem! Which is that her mom needs to know that she’s eating! Mom needs to be told what she’s eating and how much she’s eating so she can give her the proper amount of insulin. Until Addie’s old enough to understand that herself it’s very hard for the caretakers. It’s not about saying yes or no to the food, it’s not about it being a bad food vs a good food, and it’s not about being dramatic. This is showing the reality of life with a young T1D child and that every bite of food needs to be accounted for and have insulin administered. Also to those saying put it away, lock it up, or don’t have it in the house, locking up the food won’t help. She’ll be around food every day of her life, all different kinds. Locking it away or not having something around doesn’t teach her what to do when she is around it, and it creates an unhealthy relationship with eating. The bigger goal is that she needs to know she IS allowed to eat anything she wants, as long as she lets someone know before she eats and gets insulin for it. Which is exactly what mom said, but seems that went over some of your heads! A lot of T1D children and caretakers struggle with this. It’s very stressful and Addie’s mom is doing a great job.
