Dang, my son and I just watched this movie tonight, but it had the funeral ending. My son and I both agreed that we really enjoyed the movie, but thought the ending sucked. The jump scare in the car made no sense and I was confused by the John Cusack's spirit in the room at the end. This is a MUCH better ending!!

This is the 'canon' ending on the DVD I have. So weird how many endings there were made. But I'm really glad that my brother and mom got to see this ending first, because I think it's the best one.

You know a while back i thought i was tripping balls because i saw this movie with this ending on a tv channel,
then a couple of years later i watched the movie again with the directors cut not knowing it was that cut ending and it shook me really hard i thought i was losing it and it made me question reality like that parallel universe conspiracy of luney tunes-toons and i was 100% certain i watched it with the theatrical version but couldn’t find it 🤯 till i searched youtub

He was a selfish character, debunking ghost stories & destroying peoples faith in the afterlife for profit. This was a strong motif throughout the film, outlined in numerous ways. So, imo, the smile at the end when he played the tape is because he's given his wife solid knowledge of an afterlife & that she'll ultimately get to be with her daughter again. He's found redemption. That is what the smile signifies to me, & was intended to signify to the broader audience I believe.

most movies about the supernatural or just ghosts never let the characters outside of the people it happened to ever find out what happened this movie was perfect, the ending was well done and perfectly thrilling. The point is it's not just that it let her see the truth in a perfect way, it makes sense too because if you think about it a ghost didn't possess this room, it wasn't a spirit the room itself, was evil.

This ending was much better!!! Mike goes from believing ghosts don’t exist and on this ending he is proven very wrong and also having him and his wife hear the girl is more impactful than Samuel L Jackson hearing the girls voice.
I do think the new ending is ironic though, Mike dying and becoming a ghost. It’s just not as impactful

this is an experience that will drive someone insane... with all the room did to you and made you experience how sure you are that you're already out... could've let you live your life till you're old then reveal itself you're back on the room...

This one is the threatrical ending and dvd, the one in which he died was the original supposedly but the changed it to the good ending because its too dark, so instead they put it on the directors cut

I can tell which ending will get, you hear that banging sound at 1:42? That’s the banging sound when the firemen rescue Mike, but if you don’t hear the banging sound on the door, mike is dead and the firemen are too late to save him.

What I love about this ending is the shock value it has. The look on Lily's face says it all. Makes everything that happened in room 1408 all the more real. This opens much dialogue between him and Lily.
