This simple item can offer so many benefits:
It feels good! Heat increases circulation and decreases muscle spasms.

Heat relaxes tight ligaments!

This tension can pull the bottom part of the uterus out of alignment which can slow labor down. Ideally, the baby’s head is well aligned with the cervix so that with every contraction, it puts pressure on the cervix (helping it efface and dilate). If the bottom part of the uterus is being tugged or torqued by tight ligaments, the baby’s head may not be pressing evenly on the cervix.

For the intention of relaxing the broad ligament, place the hot water bottle on either side of the lower belly. For the uterosacral ligament, place it on the sacrum.

It addresses the gate theory of pain management! For relief of pain during childbirth, the “gate” is the dorsal horn of the lumbar. It relays information related to touch, temperature, and pressure from muscles. So when we apply sensory stimulation (such as heat), the fast fibers are activated, endorphins are released, and the transmission and perception of pain never reaches the brain.
