Castle Bravo was the first in a series of high-yield thermonuclear weapon design tests conducted by the United States at Bikini Atoll, Marshall Islands, as part of Operation Castle. Detonated on March 1, 1954, the device was the most powerful nuclear device detonated by the United States and its first lithium deuteride fueled thermonuclear weapon.[1][2] Castle Bravo's yield was 15 megatonnes of TNT (63 PJ), 2.5 times the predicted 6 megatonnes of TNT (25 PJ), due to unforeseen additional reactions involving lithium-7,[3] which led to the unexpected radioactive contamination of areas to the east of Bikini Atoll. At the time, it was the most powerful artificial explosion in history.

Just insane and to think how high up the plane is and far away the fire ball is. And it's that big.

And a touch of tritium expanded a 5 megaton bomb to 15 megatons produced what we are seeing. It was also the scariest because the forward observation base was almost blown apart and the scientists had to evacuate because of the radiation. This was not anticipated.

Great footage!

And to think Tsar Bomba was more than twice as big as Castle Bravo.

Would you take the opportunity to watch a real life test detonation?

It will be fantastic to watch this today, with all of modern cameras and technology. Also to see result of destruction at the moment of explosion

I wonder what a modern 50 megaton detonation would look like.

This footage is about 70 years old. It's scary to imagine how much more destructive the weapons of today are.

That is insane. Truly an atmospheric scale event. Just, wow.

Shorts - how to ruin great footage by cropping it for people too lazy to turn their phone sideways.

This test was just nuts, and the fireball did all kinds of weird shit you don’t see in smaller bombs.

How many people shit their pants that day? They were way closer than they otherwise would have been had they known it was 15 MT. The guys in the ships 23 miles away thought they were done for and said it was raining fireballs and shit. The good thing is, at least for us, is it's one of the best filmed megaton blasts released, likely because they were closer than they should have been. If you look at Yankee and Romeo they're clearly so much further away and not nearly as good of footage. One of my other favorite H bomb test films is Hardtack-oak. I love how the blast pushes the clouds away and you can see the stem rising into the air with some reddish color in it and then forms into a beautiful white mushroom cloud.

Of all nukes, this is the most apocalyptic caught in footage. The sheer scale and fireball is just unimaginable

How far was this plane from the mushroom cloud ?
