It's because we have a quota of packages we have to pack per hour and sometimes the bubble wrap / small packages aren't stocked at the station. I try my best to make the packages and items stay nice, but you get the gym bros that are competitive about rate, people that are just mad for whatever reason and/or just lazy and this stuff happens. I can't go into too many details about the packing process but most orders go through multiple hands/ buildings before they get to your door so it's not always Amazon's fault if your package is damaged. It could also arrive that way to the warehouse from the book company.
These are just my opinions as a warehouse worker. Not opinions of the amazon as a whole company.

You could always contact amazon and get another copy. As a reader I understand your frustrations. Unfortunately I see books with dents quite frequently.
