Corporal Freddie Stowers was an African-American soldier in the United States Army who served during World War I. He was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor for his bravery and leadership during an attack on Hill 188 in France on September 28, 1918. Stowers led his men in an assault on the hill despite being severely wounded, and he continued to encourage and lead his men until he succumbed to his injuries.
Stowers' actions were not initially recognized with the Medal of Honor due to racial discrimination, but after a long campaign by his family and supporters, he was finally awarded the medal in 1991 by President George H.W. Bush. Stowers' courage and sacrifice serve as a testament to the bravery and contributions of African-American soldiers in the face of adversity during World War I.
