Don't use grips with any kind of adhesive. Kontrol Freeks makes grips slip onto the the controller, which are much better, and there's also some silicone case ones that could potentially work better as well.

Hey mick. Another trick you can do to get residue off of just about anything is you can take orange scented essential oil and put it on a rag and wipe away!
