"you would no longer be you" is quite the understatement

My claustrophobia would NOT let me enter a tunnel that's exactly my size.

Yes. The best existential horror I ever read. It's such a short story, but so amazingly horrifying in that time. I never bought a copy because I think it would haunt me forever if I could go back and read it that easily.

My favorite Junji Ito story. There’s something so disturbing about it that I can’t put my finger on.

And the almost existential dread from the realization that human curiosity can lead to horrifying outcomes

Definitely one of my favorite of Junji Ito's work. He really is a master of the page flip. Something that not all mangaka really utilize. He's so good at building up suspense until you just can't take it anymore. Then you get to that page turn to reveal the horror but almost relief in a weird way since there's been so much tension up to it. One of the best mangaka out there.

Honestly when I imagine being perfectly encased by rock in one of those tunnels, I’m overcome with a sense of dread and panic. My body goes into fight or flight despite being safe and sound on my couch. Junji Ito has this incredible power to tap into my most basic, instinctual fears and turn them against me.

I usually try avoiding yt shorts because people usually try to make them seamlessly loop which usually makes me stuck watching it for an extended period of time because I'm not smart enough to notice it. I understand when it's the point of the short. But it's annoying when it's an educational short with an unnecessary seamless loop because I think they're going to bring up something new but they never do. The reason that I'm commenting this is because I can't tell if this was going to loop but was cut off, or if this is a small part to a bigger video.

Oh I have read this and I do not recommend others even know about it unless they want their minds messed with.
Surprisingly reading it fully actually made any nightmares it initially gave me during reading go away. Can only think my brain adapted to it by then.

I feel like this story is the pinnacle of lovecraftian cosmic and existential horror.

I’ve recently been seeing Ito’s other story.

… about the giant human head balloons with nooses for ropes that hunt down the person they look like to hang them.

I loved the way that the guy would have nightmares about what was in the hole, but it ended up somehow being worse.

Certainly one of my favorite stories, because intrusive thoughts and curiosity can be quite scary if you know the risk but can't resist the urge.
