🤕Tight hip flexors? Before you start stretching away, have you considered they may be weak?💪
Runners often experience tightness in their hip flexors during or after a run. But instead of assuming stretching is the solution, consider that strengthening might be needed. Fatigue in muscles can create the sensation of tightness, especially in those lacking strength. In such cases, stretching offers temporary relief, while building strength is the long-term solution.
To determine if your hip flexors are tight, weak, or both, here are some effective tests::
🔎Mobility: Modified Thomas test. The goal here is for the thigh to be below parallel with the floor.
🔎Strength screening: Standing knee to chest. Are you able to maintain this end-range position?
🔎Strength endurance: Anterior Powerline Bunkie test. The normal result on this test is 40 seconds & less than 10% asymmetry
🔎Strength: Hip flexion. Using a hand-held dynamometer, the goal for runners here is 35% of body weight & less than 10% asymmetry
Depending on your results will then dictate whether you require more strength, mobility, or both!
