My dad captured got a hold of two German pistols during WWII (he was a paratrooper). A stateside Lt confiscated them when he came home after the war. Still pissed him off when he would tell the story 50 years later.

Maybe it’s just me, but between Gordo’s mannerisms and the way he styled himself (tanker jacket with high waisted, straight leg pants, chain outside the collar of his shirt) he was styling himself like a Chicano even within his uniform. Like a GI issued Zoot suit.

I liked how in the film how the uniforms looked. How a soldier that had been around that long would naturally pick and choose clothes and equipment that they preferred the most.

Not only is the German holster a cool memento, it was designed purposefully for cross-draw unlike the US holsters. Cross-drawing would be advantageous for Gordo as a tank driver, as he is seated a majority of the time.

Fun fact gordo was also a pachuco which were Mexican American men who back then were seen as criminals to the public and unpatriotic as most did not want to go off and fight in a war for a country that had no love for them and they were also seen as taking up resources for the war effort as the pachuco zoot suits were often oversized and flamboyant and many saw them as taking up fabrics that could be sent to the war over seas meaning to prove them wrong he enlisted to fight back against the hate his Chicano/mexican American community’s were facing
