For Fireball they admitted they made that specific spell more powerful because of its "fam". Same goes for Red Dragons. Not sure about anything else they might have though, but admittedly it does kind of cause the issue of "fireball is the best spell"

It's with mentioning that Fireball originally did 1d6 per caster level, meaning that in BECMI it could do 32d6 damage...

Fireball has to do more damage beacause fire damage sucks. If it dealt radient or lightning it probably would do 6d6. If id did poison (the worst damage type) it would probably do more. 👍

Fire damage does inflated numbers and is most commonly resisted. I read about it somewhere, that Fireball and Lightning bolt have inflated numbers not because of the resistance but because of the DEX save

5e goes against a principle found in some of the earliest editions. The principle is simply to BE FAIR and apply rules equally to everyone, players and monsters alike. I find Basic/Expert and 1e to be far more consistent as they are written by fewer people.

To be fair though: fireball doesn't have multiple targets, it has one, but does area damage. Think instead: scorching ray which is a level 2, but does... 6d6 damage.

I think the reason why fireball does so much damage is because it's a bad damage type. I think the only worse types of damage are poison and non magical damage

You know, he's not wrong. It gets interesting when trying to apply say the armor and attack Tortle racial abilities to the Commoner, it now has a CR of like 1/8...... and I haven't gotten into the rest of the races that might have crazy abilities.

The dmg is not a rule book, it's a guide book. The dmg doesn't really have rules, they're the ones who actually make and decide the rules. Those aren't design rules for spells, they're suggestions so that you don't create fireball 2.0. also, fireball has only done more damage than the other spells in just this most recent version, it used to be symmetrical and scaled up to 10d6 at lvl 10.

Up casted fireball by rule is 14d6 .. Which is damage of 9th level at multiple targets. Back in 2nd Edition I had my own spell creation rules. Each edition of D&D makes changes. 2st edition monks did not Dex bonus to AC.😮
