Watching Bald Eagles as they migrate in and out of the Quad Cities is a favorite pastime in our community. These birds settle in among the wooded bluffs along the Mississippi River between December and February.
Coming from Canada, these birds are in search of unfrozen waters where they can find food.
Bird watchers love seeing these majestic creatures in action, but there are a few etiquette rules to keep in mind when enjoying the view.
Viewers must remember not to disturb them by getting to close, or being too loud. It's important not to scare the eagles, as they need to conserve as much energy as possible to stay warm and be able to find food.
Eagle watchers also may mistake a juvenile Eagle for other types of birds, but keep in mind that eagles don't mature until about age 4 or 5 and with that comes the classic white-feathered head and tail.
Since eagles love chilly weather, watchers may find themselves out in the elements, so dressing in layers is key to a comfortable and safe experience.
Another thing to remember is that drones around eagles are a no-no.
Eagles are highly protected and drones around these birds can be dangerous and disruptive.
