Im an umpire I’ve been taught different. I watch the field and when he fields the ball i shift my head to the base and i look for the runners foot hitting the bag and listen to the sound of the ball hitting the glove. Whatever comes first is the call. Imo this way can make more mis calls but yeah.

He is wrong. You do not watch the ball go towards first base.Once you know the fielder has the ball and he's about to throw it,.You already turn focusing on the first baseman, foot and sound of mitt. . The only time you yell, he is out is, if it's a Bang bang play.If not just using your arm is enough.
