South Korea, Japan and the United States kicked off their annual defensive drills on Monday (September 15) to upgrade aerial, naval and cyber operational capabilities against North Korea's nuclear and missile threats, Seoul's Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) said.

The "Freedom Edge" exercise is a five-day annual drill designed to implement regional peace and stability, South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff said in a statement, adding that the drill will be conducted in compliance with international law.

Kim Yo Jong, the powerful sister of North Korea's leader Kim Jong Un, on Sunday (September 14) warned joint military exercises of U.S., South Korea and Japan could bring about "negative consequences" for themselves, North Korea's state media reported.

Pyongyang has traditionally criticized those joint drills as rehearsals for invasion and in some cases responded with weapons tests, but Seoul and Washington say they are purely defensive.
