Gonna have to agree with Stephen here. The characters were so much more complex in the book.

... Stephen is a prolific-writer... with some interesting works; but this a rare-case where the director's "butchering" of the author's work was a stroke-of-genius. Stephen is good... but Stanley was transcendent. King was lucky to have his work touched in such-a-way.

Here is the thing, I believe it was done well on screen, because a lot of us expect the book to be translated the same on screen, but a creative director is not going to go with whatā€™s not gonna work, especially for the audience. Thereā€™s a formula in screen play and thatā€™s what they work with, some books would make terrible movies if the characters were followed through with as they were in the book, in the end it works out.

Then why did he sell the rights of his book if he didn't like the screenplay?
For money right?šŸ˜‚

I had never thought about it before, but now that you have brought it up, you are absolutely right. Having said that, I think Stephen King is highly over-rated. His books are formulaic and pedestrian. He is what Hollywood scripts are to British scripts. I wouldn't read a Stephen King book even if it was free and I was stranded for 16 hours waiting for a flight at an airport. For a really masterful read, try Clive Barker's 'Imagica,' probably the best and most satisfying read in a style that weds science fiction with horror, and does so with such creativity, elegance, and efficiency that it establishes a new realm of writing.

Rare example of the film being a much better work of art than the book

Stephen King is a bit of a baby, to be fair.
