We need a longer "eradicated diseases" list tbh

End of 2023?? I can't believe I haven't heard we were so close to eliminating polio in the wild

I fully thought we'd already eradicated it. Whoa. So glad researchers are still working on this.

Polio virus was detected in a London Sewage works last summer… we had all the local schools worried for a time. So, it’s never ‘truly’ far from the gate and we gotta stay vigilant

I love how humans looked at a deadly disease and said "I'm tired of this, I'm going to wipe you off the face of the earth now."

I had a stem cell transplant to treat my cancer. It "reset" my immune system so I had to get a lot of vaccinations again. Since there were a few cases in NY when I had the transplant, it was recommended that I get the booster, just in case. It was no big deal, but we should have eliminated it years ago, along with things like measels.

My grandpa is survivor of polio. He had it as a child and barely survived. He was very lucky to have relative who was a doctor who was able to take care of him. He still spent a large portion of his childhood in the hospital. He’s now a super health conscious older man who works out at the YMCA.

I went to college with someone who contracted polio in their birth country. I'll be VERY glad to see this bastard virus gone.

I'm currently caring for my 85 year old neighbor. He caught polio in the 40s when he was 9 years old. You have no idea how happy this makes both me and him. He has been unable to walk for 5 years so to post-polio syndrome.

I fully blame the CIA for polio still existing. We were SO CLOSE (single digits per year!) but because they posed as vaccination workers to get someone's blood/dna, there became an understandable HUGE mistrust of vaccines and vaccination uptake dropped massively. Many vaccination workers have even been killed out of mistrust and anger :(

Remember when measles was almost eradicated and people in California (and other anti vaccine folks) decided to stop vaccinating their children, which led to an outbreak? If the iron lungs make a comeback, I hope the parents can live their decisions if they decide to not vaccinate their kids again.

Was the polio outbreak in New York State (Rockland County, maybe?) of the wild strain, or mutated?

Not exactly: From the NY government health website: "In 2022, sequencing analysis confirmed the presence of poliovirus in a total of 100 positive samples of concern in New York State. Positive samples of concern were found in Sullivan, Rockland, Orange, Nassau, and New York City." I'm sure there's more.

The reason there's still polio in that region of Afghanistan/Pakistan is literally because the local community were lied to by aid workers who turned out to be working with the CIA to find terrorists like Bin Laden. Locals felt betrayed and now have massive distrust of aid organisations.
