Fun fact: Dwarfs used to have spears/polearms in older editions of warhammer. In 6e there was a major style overhaul to make warhammer grimmer and a major style choice for dwarfs was that they would only use weapons which are also tools (axes, hammers, picks) so they stopped having swords & spears on the new models.

It’s kinda funni to see dwarfs with poelarms, considering realistically they would actually use them. When most of your foes are a lot taller than you, a weapon with great reach is very useful. Not to mention in the hands of dwarfs that tend to be very regimented and drilled as they are, it would be devastating if I be at the end of their would be phalanx.
Actually considering they have gunpowder, they could also do tercios against groups like Orks and goblins.

Now that i think about it, is there a lore reason why Dwarfs don't use spears? For a defensive focus army, wouldn't using spear for reach and keeping enemy at bay with range attack make more sense than axes?

The older books do have dwarfs with spears, but that's way back in the 80's or so.

Beardlings in Mordheim could have a spear too wich was a good idea since the spear gave you first strike despite the dwarfes low initiative score. Beardlings with the spear had a higher survival rate.

I mean goats, boars and bears are all typical Dwarven mounts.
Orcs using boars was really a Warhammer thing, as usually they are portrayed riding some kind of dire Wolves / wargs or giant black horses.

Polearms and cav are stuff fantasy dwarfs would ABSOLUTELY have, considering their lack of mobility and reach.
