It's all a matter of convention. Orchestras sound best in long halls with high ceilings because we're used to hearing them played and recorded there.
In the same way, switching from the heavily coloured valve sound to the cleaner and more accurate transistor was a big difference that people were just not accustomed to. So the transistors aren't really harsh, they just change the sound much less than valves. But that association is made because everybody at the time only had valves as a point of reference.
Vinyl records also have a reputation for warm sound compared to CDs which is just due to the analog record losing some high frequencies. So if you produce for CD rather than vinyl, that is something to take into account so as to not get an uncomfortably strong top end.

I just switched to digital from analog back in January. I prefer overall sound a lot more, but having trouble recording decent bass guitar tracks...even with the exact same equipment & techniques I used with analog that sounded really good. Only "help" I can find tells me to use plug-ins, or other stuff I don't use....I don't even use a DAW, so can't use plug-ins anyway.
(I only use a simple DAW to convert my multi track mixes into a stereo mix, but that's all.)

Think in terms of BREAD....a Nice piece of Bread.....sliced and warmed up as if it was fresh from a hearth ! The Crust outside of the Loaf and then a cross sectional of a piece of Bread. Lightly Toasted with a surface finish and then more TOASTED and a CRISP TEXTURE on the Surface of the Slice for consumption. So it is the DEGREE OF CRISP...the Texture. Not saying going DARK and BURNT from too much heat exposure....but the gentle heat draws out the moisture in the Bread from being Exposed too long. The EQ technology in the Tube/Valve era was not the same as for the CONSOLE as for the next GEN going to Transistor and the developments of the various band Graphic EQ's. The WARM Tube/Valve could be more focused and crisper with a Transistor EQ and the Various Bands to tweak within the Spectrum and then sent back to a Valve/Tube.....but then it depends on where the operating point is dialed in for the Power Rail and selection of the Tube/Valve type ! The CURVE of Response is more EAR oriented with a TUBE/VALVE rather than the LINEAR aspect on PAPER with a SOLID STATE DEVICE....when it comes to what COMES OUT THE SPEAKERS hahahahaha......aside from the MATERIAL SCIENCE in the ERA and the Capacitors....the actual MATERIAL that the electron signal wave travels through as Coupling Capacitors and DC Power Rail Blocking/Separation with Tube/Valves.....as opposed to passing signal through a Solid State Electrolytic and CHEMISTRY which was ALL WET and subject to dehydration Via TIME and a Constant shift ever so Slight ....with AGE..........BUT not to be confused with EAR FATIGUE from sitting and The WHAT COMES OUT THE SPEAKERS factor.....and those LEFT & RIGHT Ears and the Blend in the ROOM.

What i dint get is analogue/tube guitar amps- far less components compared to digital solid state amps but analogue costs much much more and being on the go not much changed from inception since the radio was invented, the industry has been perfected to the point where factories have paid for the next 3 factories in costs of machinery and materials are easier to get like glass - sand, nickel, etc so we have to pay more than we can afford just to sound warm and fuzzy when we play guitar, People are greedy. Analogue to digital interfaces have been mastered and they have thats a fact, so having a computer sytem to adapt to is no excuse to ramp the price up even more.
