Thoughas the DM, presenting yourself as as a dastardly adversary for your players to beat can make it more fulfilling for them and more fun for everyone. This mostly just works if everyone gets along really well outside of the game though. (+ Having a good villain laugh helps a ton)

This gets thrown around so much nowadays that I've had a lot of trouble with people tossing out the rules to "create a better story." But then we're not playing a game. I came here to play a game -- where's the game? The story is what emerges from gameplay, reciprocally informing further gameplay objectives, from which emerges more story.
I think the healthiest attitude to have is to be able to sit down at the table, play as hard as you can, play honestly, let whatever happens happen, and then still have the grace to shake hands with your opponent at the end. Sometimes you slay the dragon; sometimes the dragon eats you; sometimes you die in a pit with a broken leg. Exploring the choices and seeing where it leads is the fun for me, not getting to the end of a prewritten narrative.

This is a problem that affects both sides of the table, someday soon I'll talk about things from the players perspectives as I have been both GM and player.

I’m usually a GM so I don’t have too much experience but I have had trouble with the opposite before where it feels like the GM wants us to fail. My table are sweethearts tho so they don’t give me too much grief as a GM :)
