Tata Group’s biggest controversy was the Kalinga Nagar controversy when Tata Steel wanted to establish its steel plant in Kalinga Nagar, Odisha. The reason was the water of the Brahmani river and the availability of iron ore and chromite in the Kalinga Nagar of Orissa state.

Which sparked a competition between Tata Steel and Jindal steel. Jindal started working on it in 2004 but Tata Steel wanted to catch up with the competition. So they started acquiring land for establishing a plant for which they spoke with the tribal people of Kalinga nagar. The people were promised compensation and new rehabilitation (new houses).

But before making it accessible to these people on January 2, 2006 something bad happened. Tata Steel started constructing a wall there. Which aroused a massive protest from the tribal community and almost 800 people joined the agitation against this sudden move.

When the situation went out of control police started firing bullets on the people due to which

12 people lost their lives and around 40 to 60 people were injured and this day went down as Black Monday in Tata's history.

In fact, before 2013, due to weak laws related to land acquisition, government and private companies in India hardly used to provide timely proper compensation or rehabilitation (new houses) while acquiring land or eminent domain.

That's why a judicial law was passed under which, from January 1, 2014, for government projects, the consent of 70% of the people and for private projects, the consent of 80% of the people is required. Along with that, laws related to new houses (rehabilitation) and proper compensation were also changed.

But the ground reality could be something different.

The incident should encourage us to prioritize collaboration over confrontation.

Tata's journey in Kalinga Nagar teaches us that development should not come at the cost of human lives. It's essential for corporations to consider the long-term implications of their actions.

Ground reality ye hai ki sasti jameen wale ko jyada paise aur mehangi zameen wale ko kam paise milte hain, aur paise lene ke liye jyadatar neta pahle hi zameen saste me khareed lete hain

The ground reality is different. You can study the cases of Sardar Sarovar Dam Gujarat. Also, on-going Bharatmala Project. The lands taken from the farmers and in return they are just revoving around offices for compensation.
