The full soil block recipe is included below. If you are just getting started with soil blocking, I suggest following this recipe exactly for the best results. Then you will know how a good mix should behave before you start experimenting with any alternative ingredients.

We make three variations of the mix for different sized blocks, this is the recipe for the mix we use the most often.

30 cups peat moss
25 cups compost
20 cups perlite
3/4 cup organic fertilizer blend
1/2 cup rock dust (optional)
1/8 cup lime
30-40 cups of water

Compost is mostly responsible for adding the microorganisms and the fine humus particles that are needed to glue the soil blocks together. Peat moss contributes most of the organic matter to help hold moisture, and its longer strands lock around each other and work with the compost to hold the blocks together. Perlite is very porous and is valuable for its ability to maintain tiny pockets of air within the soil blocks. Fertilizer provides the nutrients that may otherwise be missing from the primary ingredients. We make our own custom blend of slow release organic fertilizers, but a well balanced organic fertilizer would work here too. Rock dust is used as insurance that a wide spectrum of trace minerals are available. Lime is used to balance the acidity of the peat moss.

If you ever read this comment, I just want you to know you changed my life man. The stuff you taught us in highschool about sustainability and respecting the environment has stayed with me to this day and I intend to pass that onto my kids one day. You’re a gentleman and a genuinely wholesome person that I’m glad I had the privilege to learn from.

Where are the captions you keep mentioning on the shorts? I looked over on TikTok to see if they’re there, but I only see a handful of videos.

What can I use instead of Peat moss, im not a fan of the wetlands destruction it takes to mine it and would prefer something more sustainable. Would coco coir work as a substitute?

Hey man I like the mix but the production of perlite and peat moss are no bueno, coco and pumice stone are a good alternative. Give it a shot if you get the chance
