This is my son’s favorite Thai food! It was fun making it in Thailand during our last trip, and waiting for the opportune moment to cook them was exciting.
I can get Thai bananas here, but the ones from my store, due to the cold they’re exposed to during shipping, don't ripen properly and so they’re not a great option. Using sweet plantains is more reliable.
You can also use sliced sweet potatoes, which is also commonly sold alongside fried bananas in Thailand.
Do not use regular Western bananas for this recipe as these need to fry for 5 minutes to become fully crispy and reg bananas would turn mushy in that time.

OMG I love fried bananas!! When I lived in Bangkok I use to get some every morning on the way to work. This one lady was always there at one of the traffic lights with freshly fried bananas. It was the perfect way to start the day.

The only bananas we can get here are the standard Cavendish ones. I might be able to find sweet plantains in specialty shops, but it's harder to get them at the exact right point of ripeness.

In Malaysia also got something similar, pisang goreng. But the batter is just water, and rice flour or regular wheat flour or both, baking soda, salt and sugar.

We make them all the time in my country, Puerto Rico and yes any time is the right time for those bananas.
