I did streaming on Twitch for ~4 months when I got laid off in early 2020. Poured a lot of myself into it and learned a lot. Turns out I hate sitting in front of a camera for hours on end, so I decided to call it. I'm glad I did it even though it wasn't a monetary success, because living with regret of not knowing is a lot worse.

I'm 45yrs old and my wife and I have 4 children (ages 15 to 22). I did Youtube as a side hustle along with my 9-5 job for 2 years, then made the move to full-time content creator. I've been doing Youtube full-time now for 1.5 years and is one of the best things I've ever done. But I agree, don't quit your job until you've been doing it for awhile to make sure you love it, and once you quit, it can sustain enough income for your family.

First time a YouTube short has actually been sound advice. I say this as a married father of 2 with a mortgage

Great advice Harris. I did just that back in 2012 with WoW. I was making more money from youtube and twitch than I was my 9-5 so I quit. I was in my early 20s with nothing to loose. It went really well, it grew quickly and the money was good. Turned out after about 8 months, the dream just wasn't for me. I was stuck playing a game I didn't enjoy anymore and my audience didn't watch me do anything else. I ended up going back to work. I now post the occasional video for fun and I have a great career that I enjoy that has nothing to do with gaming or YouTube, but at least I did it and I have no regrets!

I took the risk in february! those were the exact questions i asked myself before taking the risk. i am fortunate enough to be able to support myself while i take this risk and i have the opportunity to go back to a 9-5 job. thanks Harris!

I’m saving so I can quit my 9-5 and build my own business. The plan is to have enough to last a year focusing 100% on my business which will be around content creation. I’m 33 years old and have a family so it is not as easy as quitting today but it is still posible. You just have to be more careful and plan ahead. At least that’s what I’m gonna do in about 4 months! Good luck anyone taking the leap too!

This resonates so much, I never knew how much I loved video production and content creation until I was until my 30's with a fam, just means gotta grind a bit more than 20 yr old me.

I quit my job for Youtube & my own graphic design which changed my life entirely. Know that your 9 to 5 will be a 4AM till 10PM for a while, I turned 29 today and can say its all worth it. High risk, high reward! Best decision made in life.

Wish I was less worried about my future 10 years ago. Honestly, solid advice.

I’m 41, 2 small kids & wife…mtg, etc… I’m just now starting my channel & also getting into photography… I’ll be converting my garage into a studio… if I can make supplemental income from something I love, sure! I’d love to one day go full time with it, but not until I can safely walk away from my 9-5. Do not think that it’s not possible if you have kids & are over 30.. just got to be realistic.

He’s so right, I’ve been grinding hard to get my channel growing while balancing a typical job, let’s see where this goes right? Doing both at the same time is hard but seeing the growth pick up is worth it.

I am 36 but considering it, I have 700 subscribers and 24 months spare living expenses and feel if I put a year into it I’ll know whether it’s going to take off or not. PS thank you Harris for all the honest advice and also money talk

Great advice! And just know that 20, 30, 40 are all still young. Im 25 (incredibly young) and working on growing my investment portfolio to create passive income that will allow me to drastically lower my work hours so I can have more free time to create content.

That is my thought process, risk it. You can always go back to a 9 to 5. IF YOU ARE YOUNG. Dont live life with regrets

As they say never risk more than you can afford to lose.....and if your young and nobody is dependent on your income..what have you really got to lose! I really wish I had some of these opportunities when I was in my late teens early 20s.
