Polymeric sand is better for filling paver patio joints that regular sand because it hardens when it gets wet. This helps control weeds,needs less maintenance, and is more durable, but it's more expensive and its easy to mess up if you don't take your time and do it right.
The most important parts are spreading the sand into each joint evenly, cleaning the surface of the pavers after you've spread the sand, and misting on the water.
Don't leave sand on top of the pavers because it will harden when it gets wet, and don't use too much water or the sand will wash out.

Well, this is not the way to do pavers and I’d never hire you to lay pavers! You absolutely have to use a vibrating plate to set the pavers into the sand and then use it to vibrate the sand into the joints. You will have to spread more sand after you vibrate it into the joints the first time. This is a very poor job!
