Had you ever heard about the Titanic violin before it was sold? Probably not. Experts predicted its sales price would be around $68,000 US. When Aldridge and Son sold it for $1.7 million, and it made headlines everywhere in the world. It’s wow.

One of the things that makes it a WOW violin is not the beauty or the acoustic qualities, it’s the story. Now, the good news is, you don’t have to go down with another Titanic in order to earn a wow.

You could also buy a Stradivari violin or viola for $15,000,000. This is also a wow. I am not implying that you should do it, but a da spalla gives you a wow effect without going down with Titanic or buying a Strad.

Let me share with you a story of how I almost killed an innocent cellist in Japan.

Picture this.

I am warming up before going on stage with an orchestra, playing one of Bach’s solos on my instrument on the staircase of a venue in Nagoya when I hear someone’s steps going up. I did not see who it is. And the person could not see me either. When he finally turns around the corner he almost bumps into me. A Japanese guy, carrying a giant cello case behind his back. He expected to see a cellist, maybe one of his Japanese colleagues. Instead he bumps into a stranger with an even stranger instrument which he surely has never seen in his life.

He screamed! He jumped backward and almost fell down the staircase. Thanks heaven, nothing happened.

I reassure you, no cellists were killed in the making of this instrument, but we need more musicians with big hearts for music culture to bring this tiny cello back to life BECAUSE it is a part of our musical heritage.
