This “professor” is wrong. King Kamehameha chose the flag of Hawaii to look like that because all he had ever seen were British, Russian, and U.S. flags. So me made one that Hawaiian ships would look friendly in those ports of call.
A rouge British captain claimed Hawaii for Britain but was shot down by his own government.

Facts:
1) annexation od Hawaii takes place because European-US comercial interests in Hawaii were at risk with Hawaii's announced plans to become an absolute monarchy.
2) Sanford B. Dole? Though news, he is not that guy..rather he is cousin of "that guy" James Dole.
3) And you ver look at hawaii's flag, the United Kingdom's flag is there (not the british) to honour the Hawaiis royal family friendship with the British Empire..
So when you see Roy's videos and start thinking "oh this guy sounds like he knowd his stuff" remember...its because Roy "almost got it"...

This guy doesn't know what he's talking about. I am a sovereign Hawaiian it was a illegal land grab and overthrow of the country hawai'i kingdom. I am from the country of Hawai'i not america. It was ruled an illegal overthrow of the Hawaiian Kingdom in 1993 everything this man said is very wrong.

The flag existed long before the U.S. occupation and take over. Captain James cook was the first European to find Hawaii and guess what he was British. Also all the islands that make up Hawaii were not unified until after Cook arrived by King Kamehameha. The Brits helped him unify Hawaii and he commissioned the flag in 1816 and put the Union Jack in the top left corner honoring British ties. None of this has anything to do with Dole of the American Annexation of Hawaii. Sure that happened but tie it to their flag is absurd. .

Wow this guy is way off. First Sam Dole is not the same as Dole Pineapple. He is the uncle of James Dole who started & ran Dole Pineapple. Sam Dole was a major player in the Sugar Industry. Pineapple was a small portion of the Hawaiian economy. Sam Dole became the leader of the Hawaiian Republic after the over throw. 2. The reason for the over throw was because the Hawaii Kingdom had become indebted to the Sugar Barons in Hawaii who were all US Citizens & US companies. They had a tremendous amount of power & the Queen was trying to lesson their control. Also the Sugar Industry on the mainland was trying to increase the tariffs/fees, etc... & make it more difficult to import sugar so for these 2 major reasons the US business men over threw the Queen made Hawaii an independent Republic for 2 years & then it was annexed by the US as a territory. (The US business men were backed by the US Navy which were in Pearl Harbor & there were some reports Marines were landed. Not sure where he gets mercenaries were brought in. It was the US business men & their supporters.) Queen was now not in power & being a territory no tariffs, fees, etc... Also when the Queen was let out of house arrest & went to Washington the President was not in favor of how a sovereign country was over thrown & almost gave it all back but his advisors said no. They could see the value of it's location; I.e. Pearl Harbor. FYI, Pearl Harbor had been leased to the the US Navy who made it usable for ocean going vessels by blowing up all coral created a channel. There was some foreign involvement but we did not take Hawaii to try to prevent Germany. Read Cavan Dawes' book a Shoal of Time. I used to think guy wad a history expert, now I won't bother watching his videos.

The Brits were allies with the Hawaiian Kingdom. Queen Victoria and Queen Kapiʻolani both attended Queen Victoria's Golden Jubilee in 1887, a significant meeting between the two monarchs of the British Empire and the Kingdom of Hawaiʻi. Queen Kapiʻolani traveled with her sister-in-law, Liliʻuokalani, to London where they were received by Queen Victoria at Buckingham Palace. This event is notable for Kapiʻolani's famous peacock gown and symbolizes a moment of connection between two prominent women of their eras.
