That explains why it’s so painful to crawl on your knees now and not as a kid πŸ˜…

Yup. Literally only learned this because my son was freaking out about the bone that he swears wasn't there before. I googled it and he was right, you don't developed knew caps until later.

They say it's because part of child development is crawling, as adults we can only tolerate crawling for so long because we have knee caps, kids don't up until a certain age. If babies had them they wouldn't be crawling

in general babies and especially newborns are very squishy and flexible so that they can actually fit through the birth canal. and it’s still incredibly difficult!

Me making fun of my little brother about the fact he doesn't have a kneecap

It's weird to think about it this way but babies are super durable. They can bounce back from a lot of injuries that would have otherwise left lasting damage on an adult

As mom with a six year old who still loves to come in and cuddle in bed with us in the morning, I can attests to the sharp little knees and elbows. Having soft ones before theyre born is definitely a blessing :D

Finally some doctor to clear this up. I've seen actual M.D's stating that babies/kids don't have kneecaps at all, disregarding that fact that the tissue is there, just becoming more and more "boney" over the years.

Just watched two different doctors react to the same clip with information I already knew. Pretty awesome ngl.

Another reason for the non osseous kneecaps is because it's easy to break those bones while babies learn to walk. If it's cartilage, it can give a lot more during slips and falls.

"Are you sure?" would've been my reaction too. Plus that weird look.
