How Bond Interest Rates Work
What do we mean when we say interest rates are going up and down? In the bond market, we are not talking about what the FED is going to do. The FED raises or lowers the FED funds rate, which is basically the overnight rate at which banks lend money to each other. When we talk about where interest rates are, we're not talking about that when we're talking about bonds. We generally use the Benchmark treasury rates, meaning the current yield to maturity on the 1, 5, 10, and 30-year treasuries, U.S government bonds. And the whole bond market tends to use those as benchmarks about where interest rates are.
