Yeah so, there is this targeting system in multiplayer mode, where each enemy has a targeted player and only changes targets when that player gets out of range, and it won't attack other targets, but that doesn't obviously prevent contact damage as that is a whole separate code where you can never touch an enemy without taking damage..
Either that or the dude that commented saying that the mimic thought you were its mom, is right 😅
Edit: also to clear things, the enemies do first target the nearest player, but that doesn't mean they change the target to the next near player, they change the target only when the first target gets out of range, only then they change their target to the nearest player, but as long as the initial target is in agro range of the enemy, they won't change their target to another player even if that player is closer to the enem

as a mimic expert i can actually explain this
you see mimics, like many other animals, actually imprint on the first living being they see as their mother. The mimic must have imprinted on you and thus did not attack you, only dealing damage when you got too close (affectionate biting is common amongst mimics as they generally do not harm each other by doing so due to their harder bodies compared to other creatures), when your friends got close to it however, the mimic did not see them as it's parent but as prey, as it normally would, thus it attacked them and was promptly turned into squid-food.
on the bright side, this is a monumentous moment in mimic-studying history as we now have confirmation that mimics are born the same size they remain throughout their life and do not grow.
on the... darker side...
