My reaction would be that it depends on where you are in your present life.
For example,I am surrounded,by a neighbor of abject poverty and and desperate attention stealers.
Along with a distorted home front.So to inspire myself away from the predicaments I actively fill myself with with reflective and observant narration.
There is a self.
