I would take it in the other direction. Equally as radical I would presume. That all living things have consciousness and we just think weâre the only ones to think we are special and superior.

I feel it's just an emergent property of the brain.
The brain evolves to have thoughts. But then some brains evolve further to begin to have thoughts about thinking.
It's like a second higher level of thinking.
The bottom layer of thought - the subconscious - just deals with the world. It just reacts. It's instinct.
But then, in humans, there's another layer on top of that - a "meta" layer of consciousness - that coordinates the lower layer and it can reason about its own thinking.

â They are talking about phenomenal consciousness specifically, not just consciousness which includes self awareness. So the hypothesis would be that we have consciousness line self awareness but no inner qualitative and purely subjective mental states called qualias.

I beleive that all living soul on earth have conciousness. We are all afraid to die and therefore, means we are "aware" we'll be loosing our own conciousness when it happens. Just like Elephants mourne their loved ones and remembers their loved ones. We happen to be the most conscious on earth, but who can tell what a dog feels when he look you in the eye and/or study every move you make to know and understand more about your superiority. We are all connected with a bit of our creator which we don't really know anything about. Everybody has its own version of that creator and they all call it God. We're just talking about the same source of superior energy no one has yet understood, proved and explained with our understanding of physical laws we are trapped in. I will know what happens with mine in a few a decades... in other words, soon. I did good all my life just to be sure I meet the right guy as my religion has taugh me to be the good boss. Most people look up to find him but he's hidden deep down within you; he is your conscience. That's what I observed and lived so far but I'm expecting surprises when I pass, bad or good, I don't care; as long as I'm conscious about it.

If consciousness is an âillusionâ then who exactly is this illusion tricking? For an illusion to work something needs to be aware enough to be tricked in the first place.

How I see consciousness working is how I see cars working. Itâs a bunch of Random stuff put together that works somehow. On the other hand I think if the placement and velocity of every particle was know everything could be predicted including what we think and how we act.

Yes, it is radical given what the conscious human mind has been able to achieve, scientific knowledge, technology, philosophy, mathematics, etc. Human beings seem to be causal agents who have agency.
