When she made these comments Rachel was misremembering what Sonia Bompastor had said. It was not VAR, but goal line technology, which the Chelsea manager advocated should already be available in the women's game. Now, because there is another contradiction of Rachel's comments which I'm going to make below, I want to be clear that I am a huge fan of Upfront, and of both its main presenters. The podcast is interesting, informative, and knowledgeably delivered. After the ManU - Chelsea game at Old Trafford in May, I walked past the table where they were preparing that post game episode. I'd have loved to say hello and thank them them for the pod, but they were recording so I kept walking and didn't interrupt.
As I understand her, Rachel is suggesting that there are no real barriers to the installation of goal line technology throughout the league. I’m told however that a number of WSL stadiums are not suitable for that infrastructure. The cameras need to be at different angles, both laterally and vertically. Some venues, including Kingsmeadow, cannot support the high camera positions which are required. I would argue that just because the technology cannot currently be available for all games, that should not mean it must not be available for any. This comment is already too long however, so I'll stop here.
