Tbh, golden retriever coat is far easier to care for than a shih tzu. I only owned shih tzus previously in life before I got other breeds and the reduction in grooming needed just astounded me. (Reduction in time, not elimination of grooming entirely)

The higher energy and grooming needs were a big drawback for me. I just don't want the long hair everywhere and I wanted a couch potato dog as I have medical conditions.

Very important thing to consider! My mum thought she was winning by getting a dog with hair rather than fur (standard poodle). Sure wishes she'd done more research now that she's realised he needs combing out every other day π
