It's like having an interview for a job that 10,000 others are going for and they are hiring 2 people.

It's actually a relief. Because now I know with almost complete certainty that I will never make twitch my full time job At first, I had pretty much the reaction as you when I saw the salaries. I just started streaming, and I thought "it will probably never be a career, but if the occasion shows up, I want to be able to make the same amount of money on twitch as I will make in my job as a Data Scientist". After seeing these leaks and realising I would need to be in the top 1500 at least, I thought "yeah, naaaah... that's not happening! :D"

Totally agree! Diversify your income people! 😅

Although this is twitch only. These people would be making money off merch, sponsorships, other social media platforms etc.

These creators are probably working a lot more hours than the average job too, and certainly putting in a lot more effort. 0.2% of streamers make at least the average income, but have to work the equivalent of one job and a part time job to get it. Madness.

This should be a wakeup call to all streamers on Twitch. Diversify your income. They need to see twitch as the bottom of a funnel rather than the top.

Although you are correct Harris you must also take into consideration that those numbers only include Subs, Gifted Subs and Ads. Those 3 make up to 50% of a streamers income. There still are Donations, YouTube videos, Sponsors, Merch and other side gigs that can be promoted to their following. And considering that the number of people watching streams is going to go bigger in the future as its been in the past few years we can assume that there are about double the people you mentioned that make the avg. american income. Its still very unlikely though

Yes and no though, those same twitch streamers should have other income sources as well, but even when expanding to account for this it’s still pretty alarming

The average American income is definitely not 52k a year. People like elon musk and Bezos's net worth may have an effect that creates this number on paper, but they don't fall into the category of average. In terms of the average American person, its closer to 35k

Whew I’m glad I’m planning on maintaining multiple revenue streams 👀

sadly the average American income is even less tbh; I had looked it up recently it's something like 31k-32k; though yes, if you account for tax reduction a streamer would have to make somewhere between 55k-65k to end up around the 31k average American income.

Harris - The better income barrier to use would be median income, which according to a quick search was just over 31000 a year in the US in 2019. This means that half the population makes more and half makes less than that number. I feel this number is more accurate to how our country income inequality is skewed, especially when looking at the average income. Which number on the list is that number?

Well I would say that my be from 1 or 2 sources of income. I think most of those average to below-average income streamers are just going off of donos and maybe ad revenue, but haven't really diversified their income streams to places that would give them a higher return. It's becoming painfully clear that in order to succeed financially as a stream, you must diversify in order to survive. Most people either don't know that/don't know how to, or are not willing to or don't care to go that far.

That’s just the reality of it dude. People need to realize content creation/streaming is very over saturated, there aren’t enough avid twitch viewers to watch 8.8 million people. You need to be really good at what you want to do and you need to be really lucky. streaming/content creation is the customer service industry

twitch and content creation could become a nice side hussle, but never my main source of income

I’m willing to guess it’s the same or similar on YT as well.

While you got a point… I’d love it if you could do this same video for YouTube… obviously that data isn’t available but I wonder if they were how different those numbers would be.

Great Video! This is why Diversity of income on other platforms and sources is so important as a Content Creator. Rarely should any Content Creators main source of income be from Twitch directly.

8 million people arent putting full time job level comittment streaming, or targetting a clout heavy niche. That number would decrease dramatically when adding relevant parameters. This isnt some hyper competetive pool of people. As long as you have a discernable floor of a decent personality with something niche targetting and the stream plays fine, its pretty luck and possible opportunities
