Will the US Government Shut Down?

The US government is standing at a crossroads, and the possibility of a shutdown is very real. A shutdown happens when Congress cannot agree on a budget or a Continuing Resolution (CR) to fund government operations.

Currently, the Republican party holds a majority in the House of Representatives with 219 Republican members, while the Democrats have 213. But even with that majority, passing a Continuing Resolution in the Senate requires 60 votes, which means bipartisan support is necessary.

The big clash comes down to priorities. Democrats are firm on two points: Firstly, they will not allow deportations of migrants, and they insist there must be no cuts in Obamacare or healthcare spending. Republicans, on the other hand, want spending changes and stricter immigration measures.

Whether the two sides reach a compromise will decide if the government keeps running after September 30 or if America faces another shutdown.
