Nice post! Yes, as a 72yo lifelong Beatles fan and admirer of John Lennon, I've always cringed - even in my 20s - at how determined John seemed to just talk shit about so much of the Beatles' music (including his own songs). Just like trashing an ex after a breakup. Also very elitist, imo: essentially dismissing countless millions of fans, some very skilled musicians themselves (looking at you, Fathom) as ignorant buffoons. I don't like that and never did. It's a real blot on John Lennon's legacy that he indulged in such condescending bullshit, sad to say.

One of the best basslines on Sgt Pepper. The "trill" in the first measure of the piano solo predates the one on Benny and The Jets. Paul yelling "RITA!" before the solo is the embodiment of fun. The heavy beat outro rivals the outros on Hello Goodbye and Strwbry Flds. In fact .. the Paul heavy breathing build up in the outro with John saying "Ah, leave it" at the end foreshadows their dialogue on Hey Bulldog .. Rita ROCKS! Paul damn near built a new genre in one song. Serious like what would you call it's style other than amazing? ... John saying he "doesn't like" a Paul song is the equivalent of a little boy pulling a girl's hair because he has a crush on her. You're a Bing Crosby fan, John - you're fooling no one! π

John oblivious that with that remark he was revealing his own narcissism, and that Paul was more capable of empathy. Another Day is another great example of this. That said, John did acknowledge that he was self-involved.
