Filipino new year’s tradition 🍍

Every New Year’s Eve Filipinos would usually purchase 12 round fruits to welcome in the new year displayed in large baskets/bowls.

Each of the fruits represented the 12 months, helping bring in prosperity, happiness, and luck for the upcoming year.

Technically our bowl is incomplete since my mom wanted the 12th fruit to be a watermelon (our fam’s favourite). There was a shortage in our city so we’ll check back again for any restocks before midnight today lol.

We’ve been putting pineapple in our fruit basket for New Year too until this New Year. My daughter who is very passionate about Filipino tradition told me that apparently, you don’t put pineapple or any fruit that is prickly. I only start putting pineapple because sometimes there are not enough round fruit varieties that I can buy. Anyway, when I was growing up, it’s round fruits to symbolize money(round coins) and 12 to represent each month of the year. Everybody has different opinions. Just sharing mine. By the way, I’m glad that Filipino kids living outside the country are still learning and practicing Filipino traditions. That’s great!
