According to a Uni lecturer of mine, whose uncle was a west Berlin police officer, they didnt really interfere with any escapes and in some cases even helped!

I remember as a young child watching these escapes whenever they were filmed. In the early years of the wall going up, an escape from East Berlin was always celebrated.

A member of my family only escaped because a border guard in the subway didnt see his ID. He faked it and got away with it just by stupid luck. I still cant imagine his thoughts as he just walken past and got into West Berlin. Still makes me smile uncontrolable...

My understanding of the Era suggests West Berlin police were not that eager to stop people coming over the wall, they were mainly concerned about gunfire from East Berlin during those incidents.
