Silicon Chips with #Simpsons code-names

What does this electronic component have in common with the Simpsons? In order to find out, the silicon chip inside needs to be extracted and observed with a microscope.

Hot air weakens the epoxy, allowing it to be removed from the silicon. Let's put it under the microscope to get a closer look.

This chip is the SIL154CT64 PanelLink transceiver from Silicon Image, and was given the codename Milhouse. As such, it includes a silicon doodle of Milhouse’s face.

I’ve opened up other Silicon Image parts in the hopes they may also contain other doodles, like this SIL905BCQ52. Unfortunately, not every Silicon Image part appears to have one. This part lacks a doodle, but was given another Simpson’s related codename.

This is the Selma chip, which is a DVI to VGA converter. I discovered that this part was used in the Philips FTP2.2E Plasma television, after I found a schematic for it. I wonder if any other Silicon Image parts are hiding other secrets :)

The fact that people are able to make such microscopic circuits even to as old as 60 years ago just truly makes it fascinating to explore

I remember the first time I saw something like this. I was tearing down old servers and saw a garden gnome design on one of the motherboard PCBs xD

You have an epic hobby. I wanna see you start showing the parts the NSA and CIA had a hand in, cuz I read there has been a lot of planting folk inside these companies cuz it is far cheaper than buying zero days.

Wow, that doodle is bonkers detailed! BTW, I'm actually wearing your IT'S PRONOUNCED "EPROM" shirt today, and although it's definitely some inside baseball, I'm surprised at the number of people who've asked me about it. Full disclosure, I'm around engineers & devs most days, so not surprised they'd get it (it's EEPROM BTW 😂), but still, it's definitely a great design, and as a collector of all kinds of t-shirts, I very much appreciate it! I know a few of those same people definitely want one, so hopefully that encourages more designs, because always, more t-shirt designs!

(Btw, your shirt was the catalyst for an extremely bizarre "NO ONE SAYS IT LIKE THAT" discussion regarding SOP8 & SOIC8, And whether to incorporate the number of pins at the end of the acronym into a pronunciation, and where you split up the acronym if stated as a single word. It became so ridiculous that it seemed like everyone was joking with each other, but no one wanted to admit it. For example, SOIC8 was claimed to be pronounced "sui-c-ate" or "sui-kate", and my absolute favorite is now SOP8 pronounced "so-pate" and/or "sop-ate" 😂😂🤣🤣. I'm gonna be: "plz hand me an 8-pin small outline package", 'cause now it's just weird.)

Great stuff brother, love your channe

have you had any luck looking at more modern chips? I'm thinking a GPU from the last decade.
