It’s because they grow the claws back they take a claw and real ease the crab to prevent over fishing

Not sure about the Pacific crabs, but stone crabs will regrow their claws, making the claws a sustainable harvest. And you can eat the bodies when they molt their shell as "softshell crabs."

Used to catch these along with dungeness crab in Seatle. Ate every bit of it. Not eating the rest is an absolute waste

I love Pacific Red Rock crab! At least in Washington, you do harvest the whole crab, but their bodies and legs don't have a lot of meat compared to the claws so I imagine that's why they only sell the claws commercially.

This is great, I like to use channel lock pliers since I can size it just right to the crab and then when it breaks im less likely to go into the meat and just gets a nice crack!

Its because their claws grow back super fast so you get a bigger more consistent yield keeping the crabs alive and just harvesting the crusher claw

I think you mostly find the claws because that's what most people fish for since they naturally drop with not much force so they don't have to kill the crab and just throw them back

New England is having a huge problem with invasive green crabs. You should find a good way to prepare them to help conservation efforts.
