How To Build A Small Patio DIY step 4

Step 4 in building a small DIY paver patio is pouring the sand base. You need at least 1 inch of masons sand under the pavers to keep them flat.

Pour the sand and level it with a rake, screed, or shovel as you go, but don't worry if it's not perfectly level, you'll be doing that in the next step.

Make sure to use coarse masons sand and not fine sand for your paver base. It compacts hard and prevents settling.

I like sand better than stone dust because it drains better

Cheap fix put a noodle bumper on your wheel barrel to keep from scratching pavers

You need clean crushed 3/4” stone and then 3/8” clean crushed stone on top of that. Sand retains water and your pavers never gets a chance to dry out after a rain. With clean crushed stone for a base the water drains immediately.

Try a clean sub base and screenings. You are welcome

Minimum of 6 " compacted clean gravel, compacted every 2 inches on a compacted sub base. Set screed bars off your string line. And it does matter that the sand flat and even underneath otherwise may have issues with settling. Under no circumatances should you use any more than 1 inch of sand. You are welcome.

Real question, why use a wheelbarrow over a cart? Is it just price or is there another reason I don’t get?
