Pretty cool trick with the knife and rotozip. Maybe a vacuum attachment would be necessary at times. If you put all the pressure towards the back of your blade while cutting sheetrock with a razor knife you can get very clean cuts in 1-2 passes. Takes a bit of hard headed practice and goes through blades, but no noise, no dust and a cleaner patch. Depends on the application I guess. Either way keep working with your hands. ☮️

The guys at work argue that it's a wasted step even when I freehand the razor cut. I think it just is cleaner, but then I hear the joint tape is two inches wide and a mile long in 10 minutes, you'll never see that patch. Pre Cutting the hole with also help the bit cut through thick joint compound. I have turned bits red hot from 1/4" thick existing patch work.

I haven't used a rotozip for unguided cuts for more than a decade. Oscillating Multitools gave my rotozip a break. Faster, and easier dust control too.
