Ive spent hours learning color theory and i see what you're trying to do here. But with the saturated skin tone and the other saturated color your adding gives it no recognizable difference between the face and canvas. Its just too similar given they're all bright colors. Color theory makes a huge impact whenever shading and lighting is involved. A great example of this is the Akiyoshi illusion where the face seems to be a different color (when its not) because of the lighting. To make the colors more distinguishable from each other is to desaturate and darken your flat colors so your other light source will look different on the skin compared to the white canvas. But then again, its hard to accomplish that with only using two colors. So try out some studies! It can be pretty amazing how color works and how our eyes percieve it :)

Bro telling us to go to the eye doctor, while it IS the same colour. I am sorry to inform you, but this is not colour theory, I'll give you a tip though, see there are cool colours and warm colours (im hoping you know that already) so if the background was a cool colour then the colour would have a difference. I hope this helped!! ^^
