Sati was not a pratha it was sacrifice of Bharatiya women during the invasions showed inhuman approach towards women and children. The invaders used to do severe inhuman atrocities against dead body of women too. Also when Khilji invaded Bharat in North and won over the North side Kings. Rulers through unfair means you must be knowing the Great Rani Padmavathi and more than thousand of queens did Johar with their dead husbands because those invaders won't even leave behind the dead bodies of women and used to do severe inhuman atrocities against them that the reason because of severe injustice on common people during those era .
That's the reason we would see Sati practices in medevial period of Bharat when Bharat was under the rule of Invaders.
Or else in our ancient culture of Bharat even after the death of Raja Dashrath the wives of King Dashrath didn't went to Sati or sacrificed their lives. Also even if we come across the Vikramaditya reign, King Chandragupta reign, almost if we look at the Bharat a thousand years ago Idea before invasions period era there we do not find any of the fact or incident of Wife sacrificing herself after the death of her husband..
