I graduated art school in 2019. All Aās in my art classes but at what cost. Iām still feeling the effects, it burned me out so badly, to the point I didnāt even want to touch art for the next year or two. It doesnāt guarantee you a job anyway in that field, which is a sad reality.
Iāve been steadily working my way back out of my art rut, and I can honestly say iāve learned more from tutorials and youtube than I ever did in college.
You are exactly right. College isnāt for everyone and honestlyā¦ one doesnāt need it for art. What one needs is a strong portfolio instead.

I love drawing sice I was 3, but I didn't choose an art school. I still draw a lot and I don't understand why some people wouldn't call me an artist just because I learned to draw by myself

I never told my parents this, but I regret going to college and getting a graphic design degree. Sure I learned some skills, but it had a very negative impact on my mental health and my degree has done basically nothing for me when it comes to job hunting.
If I could go back in time, I either wouldnāt have gone to college at all or I would have chosen a degree that I know would have been enjoyable and made me happy. Like animation or character design.
For the most part, my years at college are just stressful memories or something I thought I had to do or I wouldnāt get a job otherwise.

Thatās a GREAT way of explaining how I feel about art school, a degree just to MAKE art??? Itās ridiculous! Learning yourself is less overwhelming, more time-efficient, and financially responsible. Donāt burn yourself out just to conform to what everyone claims is the ābestā for you. Only YOU know your limitations and goals. No one else should decide your path for *you*. You CAN be successful on your own, you just have to work on it. Thank you for spreading this out there!! ā¤
