Before an interview go to the 'about us' section of the company website. Take notes and ask a question to clarify one thing. For example, if you see the company has been rated employer of choice. You can mention this to the interviewer and tell them you would like to work for an employer that has been rated highly by their employees.

What about when a recruiter reaches out to you Re: a role at a company. The recruiter finds you and emails you that they think you will be a good fit for the position and would like to speak with you. Once you set a time and day the recruiter starts with why did you reply to their email and why do you want to work at xyz organization. I think it is a bit off-putting and another recruiter I know said that was weird as normally when a recruiter finds you they should be enticing you as to why you should work there since they sought you out.

I know I've had the reverse of this where the interviewer clearly hadn't read my resume. I had been excited to get that job and work there, but that killed it for me. When they called me back I turned them down. If they don't care about me when they're hiring, I suspect they won't care about me when I'm working there.

I did so much research on a company once that i found a second website that they'd stopped updating a decade ago. Apparently bringing that up was bad because the interviewer's demeanor immediately shifted. He became defensive of the new website, and "i should have known which was the correct one." Well yeah, one of them had a copyright from 2011...

A friend of mine got an interview for a job and he did a lot of research and was able to present what he had learnt - this was back in the late 70s and before Google.
The interviewer was very impressed and he got the job - even though he'd done the research on a totally different company in a different industry that had the same name!
He's still there now, more than 40 years later.
