My dad did that during wwll. He learned at a very young age how to survive out in the open land in Texas. Some of his baddies stayed close to him because of his survival skills, and was a good cook, too.

An uncle got crushed by a bale of hay on the farm. This was during the winter, he would of froze to death by the time he was found. The hay protected him from the cold, but it broke his back. Never to walk again.

My uncles gun smith taught me a great idea for emergency bedding, he said create a surface in similar sized branches or small logs and then line with some sort of padding like brush, the wood insulates so well but it keeps you off the ground and we tried it once while camping and I was genuinely amazed how warm and dry the underside was!

As kids we would dig a long tunnel in the snow between the street and sidewalk and put a fire at the end with a hole for a chimney. Slept in it when it was -32 degrees! Yes, I am serous! It was actually warm inside! The snow pack was at least 4 feet tall about 4 feet wide... It was pretty cool... The roof was angled upwards from the entry up to the chimney part where the smoke went out...

This guy is one of the survivalists who don’t just say things and he actually proves they work so that’s a first

In Canada, if the winter, our Regiment had a winter warefare/survival excercise.
Each platoon unloaded Toboggans, each of which had a 5 man artic tent, coleman stove, lantern, pot set, frozen blocks of ice for drinking water, fuel, pioneer tools ... shovel, pick, axe, snow saw, snow knife etc.
All this on top of our Battle order ... rucks with cold weather gear, radios, weapons, ammo etc ... approx 80 to 90 lbs of gear with snow shoes etc. Just as we were getting ready to head out, some twit decided, that since it was a balmy plus 5 Celcius, that we should leave the tents behind ... check the weather forecast??? F no, why do that??? So we head out, get to our various spots and make improvised shelters for the night ... the temperature drops to MINUS 35 Celcius, with thick snow and high winds ... well screw that, the rule for not chopping down trees for fuel or shelter went out the window ... the small fires with reflectors to help direct the heat, were a joke. Soldiers all over, freezing ... come morning to try to hide the "evidence" of chopped down trees we hid them in the nearby trees ... one of our guests from the US, wandered onto a frozen river unbeknownst to us. He gleefull yelled at us, and started jumping up and down ... before we could yell to get out of there ... sssploosh ... through the thin ice, up to his chest.
Forming a chain on our bellies, we got him out ... now completely soaked, the outer parts of his unifor freezing ... as a section NCO I pointer to a spot in the clearing and said ... fire, there, NOW. Grab the branches of evergreen trees, spruce, pine etc. The group reacted admirably ... the fire lite, the US soldier from a sister regiment, stripped, and rotated in front of the fire like a rottesierie chicken.
In the Excitement of the moment, and to keep our guest alive, the boys had collected the sizable stack of branches ... about 20 feet high, and kept on piling on the fuel ... Well, if you have never seen a smoke stack reaching into the clouds, it's AWESOME. Unfortunately, unknown to us, so did the forestry guys ... the chopper must have been going like hell, knap of the earth, that we did'nt even hear him above the roar of the fire, until the pilot flared out about 300meters from us, and hovered approx 150meters above the ground. The pilot, co-pilot and observer ... gawking at us ... the naked guy, the footprints to the river, the hole in the ice, that beautiful, gorgeous fire, toasting his wieny and chestnuts ... the whole storey plain to see.
After watching us for a very slow minute, we see the pilot shaking his head from side to side, the nose of the chopper dropping as the pilot picked up forward momentum and fly back over the ridge whenst they came.
All of us stunned, busted for cutting down trees, looking at each other, realization at the ridiculous nature of the scene, what it must have been and the simultaniously falling over in an uproar of laughter ... including our guest ... Yep, did we catch hell when we got back ... the forestry complained to the Brigade about the fire and the use of the chopper etc. etc. Lol sure brings back memories.
😲🤯😳😂😂

"Don't die in the woods" has a mylar blanket that'll fit in a shotgun loop.
They also make a mylar tent that tucks in that hip pocket real nice.
No to mention single sleeper heavy wool ponchos/woobie poncho systems that also fit when nicely rolled.

But nevermind all that, why the hell y'all hunting out in no man's land without even a daybag?

This reminds me of when I was homeless, the coldest night I've ever attempted to sleep is 17°, I say attempted because I took no precautions n I found God on those nights. Praying really helps. Find God, stay warm and great idea!

Woulda been cool to see a temp comparison. With a thermometer inside the hole but outside of your coat. Just to compare to the 50 degrees without it🙂

When I was 19 I would sleep in the bed of my pick up. All it had was a camper shell on it and about 6 comforter blankets and a pillow. Oh ya did I mention I lived in Alaska and it was -30 below zero. The worst part was in the morning jumping out to start my truck then running back under the warm covers why my truck gets warm.

You oughta get a thermometer to put inside the pile, to show the difference in temperature.
