Funnily enough, in Brazil, we never address senior officers as Capitão(Captain), even though our ranks for senior officers are: Capitão de Corveta(Lieutenant Commander), Capitão de Fragata(Commander) and Capitão de Mar e Guerra(Captain). We always call them Comandante(Commander), unless of course we're saying their full rank then we say Capitão de Corveta etc. Same goes for the captain of a ship, even if he's a Capitão-Tenente(who we would usually adress as tenente) we call them comandante if they're the captain of the ship.
The rank that is adressed as Capitão in the Brazilian Navy is Capitão-Tenente(FN) of the Marine Corps, because of it's equivalent in the army being capitão.

In the USN, a Commodore is still considered a temporary position where a Captain is filling an Admiral's position.

I learned this just the other day. A meme on r/explainthejoke showed an army major who had mouthed off to what he thought was an army captain. Turns out it was a navy captain.

Perhaps you could do a breakdown of all the HRE titles? I know it’s pure headache but it would make for a interesting set of videos.

Captain Cook did not receive the rank of Post Captain until returning from his second voyage. He was a promoted to Lieutenant to enable him to have sufficient rank to command his ship on the first voyage, and commander on his second voyage

Is a RAF group captain considered higher in rank than a RN captain?

OK, so why did the rank of
" commodore " become a discontinued rank in the Navy ?

To add context. A gun turret on a second world war battleship. Would be commanded by a captain.

there is the rank of Capitan general which has been used in many countries as basically the equivalent of a field marshal.
