Working with Talocrural Joint Restrictions

Protective muscle guarding from ankle injuries may cause ongoing restrictions in the talocrural joint.

During healthy gait, this joint should dorsiflex 15 degrees. If the ankle is restricted in dorsiflexion, the knee and hip will not fully extend. This can cause back pain from decreased hip flexor mobility and repetitive stress on the spine during gait.

The joints of the mid-foot control motion of the foot anteriorly. When you mobilize these joints effectively, clients notice a dramatic difference in their ability to bend their toes and walk freely.
