It scares me that you have to remind other anasthesthiologists this

The blood pressure cuff should always go on the opposite side as the IV. That will help prevent the vein the IV is in from blowing. That's very important with a person with very hard to access veins. Propofol always burns, so ask that Lidocaine be given first. It stings a little, but it's much better than the burn. I have surgical procedures quite frequently, so all of my regular requests are mentioned on my anesthesia chart.

This happened to me. It was agony and I tried to jump of the table. The last thing I remember was jumping of the table and a very small nurse trying to stop me. I woke up with bruises everywhere. I asked what happened when I woke up panicking. They denied anything happened. Years later it says on my notes I have had an adverse reaction to anaesthetic.

I wonder why all my anesthesiologists didn't warn me. (I did suggest it due to breaking my arm just below the shoulder so I never use blood cuffs on my right arm even if it's been a long time) Had both hips replaced at 29 in '23. It burned so bad until I completely fell asleep thank God but I was holding my arm in excruciating pain. Like gasoline on fire. I'm having surgery on my left elbow soon so I'm definitely remembering this Thank you for this! They should have known better you'd think.

Yep, this has happened. I ended up removing the cuff myself. Never been happier to have a central line now LOL

Iā€™ve had a lot of it in my life. I just had a surgery and it was the first time it burned horribly. I fought them and all but rolled off the table. Crack two ribs while I was at it. Now I know why. Thank you

Most pain of any experience I have ever had was from my second epidural! The anesthesiologist did not properly instruct me! It had been 7 years since my first birth so I had not remembered to lean forward and dude said keep back straight and still and didn't tell me to bend at waist like a ball then h inserted the needle 10 times without changing these directions so he was hit me in vertebrae instead of between I tell you what it was like an electric explosion of venomous thumb tacks every time I will never forget it and I still have painful scar tissue

So so trueā€¦ letā€™s say I am a ovarian cancer survivor which have through many many surgeries and procedures. The day Covid started and all lock down weā€™re being put in to place ended up with a right facial paralysis caused by Bellā€™s palsy. And a symptom of shingles. My ent decided the best thing to do is to place a tube in both sides of the year. Iā€™ve had many surgeries, many procedures, many years of chemotherapy, but let me tell you nothing hurt more than that purple fall shot IV in the OR room I was screaming, bloody murder, and I just wanted to jump out of that bed please please people use lidocaine I beg of you lose lidocaine with propofol when trying to induce your patients. I was diagnosed at the age of 19. I have an amazing husband who himself is an amazing physician with 54 certifications so basically Iā€™m just saying this that I donā€™t come from the side, the street I know my stuff and I do have a good huge supporting in my family. As much as I begged her, she would not listen. She just shut the mask on my face and asked me to breathe that even freaked me out more like Dr. Cathy says you need to be your own advocate nobody else is going to do it for you.

Does it burn because the cuff is restricting blood flow and cause the propofol to be stagnant in the veins?

Burn like IV Vancomycin? The most painful medication I have ever experienced. I would see the nurse coming and burst into tears.

It is amazing that no more people die, (or maybe we dont hear about it), due to negligence.
I had to go to the ER because my left knee was bigger than a cantaloupe melon and the pain was excruciating. By the way, I had knee replacement surgery two weeks later.
Anyway, I was given morphine in my vein. About 5 minutes later a male nurse comes in waving a syringe in the air and telling me that he was my guardian angel coming to make me feel better. I asked him what he was giving me and he said morphine. I proceeded to inform him that I had just been given morphine a few minutes earlier. He insisted that no, I had not gotten anything and that it was written in my chart that I was to get a shot.
I must explain that I was all alone. Fortunately, I was still somewhat clear-headed so was able to let the nurse know. Well, he was undaunted in his guardian angel role and proceeded to reach for the IV. I raised my voice and told him he was not to get near me or I would kick him, you know where, with my good leg. As he would not listen I began to scream and he finally left. A few minutes later another nurse came in apologizing. It seems that the first nurse, the one that gave me the shot, had fotgotten to note in my chart that she had already given me a shot.
Had all of this taken place ten minutes later I would have died from an OD because I would have not been clearheaded enough to refuse the injection!
I had my real Guardian Angel watching over me or I would have not been here to share this with you.
Always make sure that you have someone with you so that you are not alone. Unfortunately, I am a widow, this was late at night and impossible to get help.
God is good!

Working in animal medicine we never put the BP cuff on the leg with the catheter. It will obstruct the flow of fluids as well that we ran during surgery to help with anesthesia. Always use another spot for the BP cuff other than the limb with the catheter.

Also, ask your anesthesiologist to use a bit of lidocaine in the propofol if you know it burns. It burns some people but not everyone. Ask for the lidocaine..

True story šŸ˜¢ that or being allergic to a medication and not knowing it until it burns and itā€™s inside you. Thatā€™s bad too (vancomycin), itā€™s not only painful but one of the scariest experiences of your life

I notice a miss conception in the comments. Propfol is base so its burn when you give it IV some people it hurts alot and some people dont notice anything. Thats why we usually give lidocain the makes the burning less. But propofol with an inflated cuff makes the propofol stand ā€˜stillā€™ in the vain which makes the burning worse. But this doesnt mean that everyone who felt and burning sensation when putting down had an anesthesiologist who forget to turn of the BP cuff! All anesthesiologist no this, but sometimes we forget because the BP isnt usually on the IV arm.

Thank you!!! Finally someone tells the truth lol. I had it happen to me during my shoulder surgery. I remember the burning and it was getting so bad I reached over with my bad arm and started ripping off the cuff. I knocked out after that and woke with scratches on my arm. Ugh šŸ¤¦šŸ»ā€
